FIWARE, The Open Source Platform for our Smart Digital Future – Presented by Valentijn de Leeuw, 3IF

FIWARE, The Open Source Platform for our Smart Digital Future – Presented by Valentijn de Leeuw, Vice President ARC Advisory Group, Industrial Expert at, Belgium, at Intelligent Sensor Networks Conference, on January 18, 2019, at Rotterdam AHOY, The Netherlands.

Digitalization starts with digital representation of physical assets (buildings, factories, transport means, utilities, etc.) and the environment (weather, traffic, etc.) Activities in different sectors need to exchange information about those assets in a meaningful way. This requires information model or data model, which specifies with information is stored where, what its meaning and content is.

This context provides meaning to data. FIWARE has developed a standard for the exchange of context information (FIWARE-NGSI), and technology enabling this exchange (FIWARE context broker).

FIWARE is an open source platform that also includes other enablers and solutions to build smart (IoT) solutions.

This would enable organizations to build their IoT solutions quickly and cheaply and provide interoperability among those solutions, even if they are built for different activity sectors (smart city, smart farming, smart manufacturing, etc.)

What drives you?
The competitiveness and sustainability of the European economy

What are the three things you would take with you on a deserted island?
An axe, a lighter and snorkel equipment

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Short and long term the reduction of CO2 production should be stimulated through efficiency and insulation, and CO2 consuming innovative processes.

Pollution and the use of pesticides should be tabled in parallel. IoT and traditional measurement will support this.

In manufacturing, IoT-enabled smart maintenance and concurrent optimisation of production, maintenance, quality and supply chain can bring the industry to the next level of performance.

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
It will depend on how cleverly policies and tax schemes will be divided. We must tax CO2 production and favour renewables, and make sure the least well-off can afford to make the necessary changes. This will require transfer of tax money.

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Short-sightedness and politicians who want to please rather than solve issues.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
It will help participants making (industrial) IoT and smart initiatives more efficient and focused

“Special Quote”
Digital transformation has many aspects ranging from strategy, via standardization to technology. The most critical one is probably the human aspect. We must restore the fit between the worker’s characteristics and new work, to make smart working work. This cannot only be done with technology, and requires face-to-face conversations and coaching.
