Orange losing faith in Brussels’ ability to transform telecoms market

Elie Girard, senior executive vice president in charge of group strategy and development at Orange, has backed up a GSMA report that calls for the simplification of M&A and regulatory activity in Europe.

In a wide-ranging interview that touched on the telecoms single market, the “problem” in Belgium and clarification on the sale of video site Dailymotion, Girard pointed the finger at senior European figures.

Last week, the GSMA said market fragmentation is perhaps the biggest problem behind the European wireless market lagging behind that of the US.

Its public policy chief Gabriel Soloman told European Communications that the EU competition authorities had shown “a lack of understanding” and that Joaquín Almunia, the current Commissioner responsible for competition, has been “too reticent”.
