Marissa Mayer, Yahoo! and the Fourth Mobile Wave

It’s been almost four decades since the first mobile telephone call was made.

The world has fundamentally changed since that day. Today, over 5 billion people are connected globally with mobile devices. Mobile has gone through several distinct phases of evolution. It started with simply getting connected. Today over 80% of the world’s population is communicating via mobile phones.

The second phase was connecting seamlessly by integrating wireless access methods such as 2G, 3G, and Wi-Fi in devices.

The third phase, underway today, is about connecting a broad range of mobile devices and wireless sensors. This is also known as the Internet of Things and Machine to Machine (M2m).  In fact, several companies such as Ericsson and Cisco have predicted there will be over 50 billion connected devices by 2020.

Mobile is now about connecting people and the Internet of things.
