Photonics is key technology for smart factories
Sensor networks for smart industry (industry 4.0 / industrie 4.0) and smart infrastructure are getting more and more essential. Real time information from ‘the real world’ to support decision making and control of vital processes will be an integral part of business processes.
Photonics provides smart factories with optical fibres for high-speed, reliable data communication, fibre lasers for production and sensors for intelligent feedback. One of the most promising developments is the ‘smart laser’, that understand what material it processes, how the process develops and when it is finished. Smart lasers are highly flexible and can adapt to changes in the material, such as shape, reflectivity, thickness and orientation.
The ISN Conference consists of several workshops where endusers and suppliers will meet and discuss what is needed for Smart Industry and how photonics can support this.

Photonics is a key enabler of the Internet of Things
Without photonics, the interconnectedness of physical devices and their ability to share and analyze information about their surroundings would not be possible.
For its implementation the Internet of Things relies heavily on sensor technology. Sensors need to be small, robust and energy efficient to be embedded in machines, appliances, buildings and infrastructure and succesfully collect data over large periods of time.
Fibre optic sensors – manufactured using photonics technology – are not only more sensitive than existing electromagnetic sensors, but also faster operating, better able to withstand harsh conditions and immune to electromagnetic interference.
Some of the most significant photonics IoT applications are: communications, transportation, environmental monitoring, smart homes, factories, and gadgets.
The IoT event consists of several workshops where endusers and suppliers will meet and discuss what is needed for Internet of Things and how photonics can support this.

Lasers are one of the most widely used photonics tools. They are ideal for manufacturing strong lightweight constructions, such as wind turbine blades or crash-safe car chassis. But also the production of batteries, fuel cells and solar cells requires laser technology. And every semiconductor chip today is manufactured using optical lithography, a form of laser technology. Photonics – saviour of data centers
More bandwidth, higher speeds and lower energy costs
As of 2018 more than 4 billion people worldwide are using the internet. Data traffic is growing at alarming rates and expected to double in size in the next three years. In the foreseeable future the current silicon chip based internet infrastructure will be unable to cope with the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth.
Photonics technology reveals the way forward with the creation of ultrafast chips and fibre optic cables based on light sources. By using light as a way of transmitting data these technologies far outperform the existing copper solutions. Photonics is playing the enabling role for sensors and data transport to create the IOT. In this talk we will elaborate on the role of photonics sensors for data generating devices for IOT. Photonics sensing is becoming more important and especially sensors for monitoring the environment are. An example of a fine dust sensor will be given which has enabled community sensing as well as sensing for improving the work conditions in construction work by ISENSIT. Data centers have double growth numbers already and this will continue in the coming years. The datacenters are the physical location for the IOT Cloud. The data transport is having similar growth numbers and the photonic components are the enablers for the miniaturization, energy reduction and bandwidth needs in the data centers. Examples will be given on these components and the importance of photonics will be described by the unique lasers being developed by VTEC and Sinochip for data transport in data centers.

Graphene and graphene-related materials (GRMs) are ideal materials for flexible electronic components, as graphene is inherent ultra-thin, flexible, elastic and almost completely transparent. Graphene-based photonic sensors have a remarkable performance and can be used for pollution sensing, security, night vision, automotive as well as health and fitness monitoring. ICFO has demonstrated wearable photonic sensors for fitness monitoring, such as heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. These ultra-thin and wearable demonstrator devices were demonstrated recently at the mobile world congress in Barcelona. In the near-future, more fitness and health markers will become available, with the potential to predict illness, fatigue etc.
