Today, we are entering the era of the ‘connected world.’ By 2020, over 25 billion of devices will be interconnected (wirelessly), the so-called Internet of Things. That opens up a vast range of opportunities for society, labour, industry, house-hold, health care, transportation, etc. We certainly have the potential and tools and technology to realise this change. But if you don’t want to be left behind, now is the time to take action to make it happen! Collaboration is key to proceed effectively and efficiently. That’s exactly the ambition of the ‘Smart Systems’ project.
The “Smart Systems” project, funded by OP Zuid and Stimulus, focuses on an integrative approach, engaging all relevant stakeholders in the Internet of Things ecosystem, to speed up development and implementation of solutions for health care and smart industries and eventually aiming at enforcing the competitiveness of individual companies in a global market. Together with companies, knowledge institutes and network organisations and guided by DSP Valley, the project is supported by hands-on, in-practice demonstration projects complementing the technological fingerprint of the ecosystem. A new Digital Experience lab, together with tech-multinational Philips Innovation Services Greenhouse enables experimenting, demonstrating, validating and in the end volume manufacturing: faster, better and cheaper! Trustworthy IoT for Industrial Applications – Presented by Mario Drobics, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology at the Internet of Things Event, which takes place on Jun 08, 2017, at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
IoT can be a major driver for the digitalization of industrial environments. When applying IoT technologies in such environments (factories, energy networks, traffic, etc.), specific requirements regarding safety & security, reliability, and resilience have to be addressed. These requirements have to be considered along the whole product life cycle, i.e. from the specification and design of the product, along the production process, and during the actual usage of the products. In this talk, we will give an overview on these challenges and present results from different European research projects addressing these challenges. Fast and industrial prototyping of key modules for Smart Systems – Presented by Jan Mink, VTEC Lasers & Sensors & Sieger Swaving, Philips Innovation Services, at the Internet of Things Event 2017, which takes place on Jun 08, 2017, at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The increasing level of integration and complexity in to-be-developed smart systems requires low entry access to fast prototyping for quick technical verification and early customer demonstration. Speed in prototyping is not only a matter of a creative and pragmatic approach finding new solutions to conflicting requirements, but also a matter of maximally using proven process flows, platforms and components. So much the more because about 80% of the key product properties like manufacturability, cost price and reliability are defined in the development phase. The DX-lab of VTEC and the Greenhouse Micro-assembly factory of Philips Innovation Services have the infrastructure and expertise to provide fast prototyping, not as an isolated activity, but as a first step towards new product introduction and volume manufacturing. “How to make an IoT solution come true?” – Presented by Peter Simkens, DSP Valley at the Internet of Things Event, which takes place on Jun 08, 2017, at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
In order to make an IoT solution come true, a lot of diﬀerent competencies and technologies are needed. From a technology point of view, IoT solutions become possible thanks to Moore’s law for semiconductor technology, bringing miniaturisation, low cost volume production, low energy consumption and compute performance. From a value chain point of view, the semiconductor technology needs to be applied tot he embedded sensor nodes, and to be combined with other disciplines including wireless broadcasting, app development, smart data analysis and cloud technologies. This introductory presentation will highlight some technology evolutions and trends, as well as the need for partnering in an ecosystem context.
About Peter Simkens
Dr. Peter Simkens holds a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (1984) and a PhD (1990), both obtained from KULeuven. During more than 10 years, Peter Simkens was involved in development projects for the European Space Agency, including the development of training and simulation facilities for European astronauts, and the development of real-time IT-systems for space applications. In 1998, Peter Simkens became managing director of DSP Valley, the cluster of excellence in Smart Electronic Systems, headquartered in Leuven (Belgium). He developed DSP Valley to an outstanding business and innovation. Over the last 3 years, he has been transforming the DSP Valley eco-system from a cluster of micro/nano electronics technology providers to a full value chain cluster in smart electronic systems and IoT solutions, including applications in smart health, smart industry, smart cities and smart vehicles. Currently, he is also pioneering in stimulating cross-disciplinary innovation, by combining different Key Enabling Technologies. As an individual, organization and society we undergo a technological revolution. Our postmodern society is increasingly based on people, organizations and objects that are linked in networks. Also the worldwide industry cannot escape from these developments. As a consequence of this, terms like industrial internet, advanced manufacturing, smart industries and cyber-physical systems become more usual. This fourth industrial revolution as the World Economic Forum appoints this development, forms a new challenge for companies and organizations and also a necessity to reinvent their (production) processes. For those devices that do employ hardware security, applications are often placed into a single zone, where it is possible they could compromise each other.
